“Things Have Changed – Part One” … Commentary by Chris Morgan
How many people living with HIV are being declined for Life Insurance currently?
Over the past 13 years I’ve met hundreds of people living with HIV who have been turned down for Life Insurance by the UK Financial Services Industry. The onset of the the Covid pandemic in 2020, meant that there was also a large increase in the number of people that have been turned down for Life Insurance.
We know that 56% of people living with HIV are currently being turned down for Life Insurance, the estimated figure is more likely to be nearer 70%. Many are deemed uninsurable when they apply with their banks or financial advisers – this is mostly without any reasonable explanation and is stressful for the applicants involved.
Unusual Risks have been working hard to reduce these numbers, via direct consultation with the Life Insurance companies that we deal with. We currently have a very high success rate of finding cover for people who have been declined for Life Insurance elsewhere.
Chris Morgan is a fully qualified Financial Adviser and has been writing on HIV Insurance and HIV Finance issues for over 20 years. His column has previously been resident for publications such as Baseline Magazine and Pink Paper.

The new products are only available through a broker such as Unusual Risks and are not available through Banks and Mainstream Insurers. When price checked against the major banks and insurers, the majority of them are charging double or triple those premiums being charged within the new products available through Unusual Risks.
Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;
“The new generation of products mean that anyone who took their policy before March 2018 should review their current arrangements, especially if there existing cover is with Zurich, Vitality, Liverpool Victoria, Legal & General, Exeter Friendly or Aviva. Those policy holders are likely to be overpaying and should seek advice on the current market rates”.
Chris Continued ..
“We are also aware that 75% of Banks and Life Insurers are either currently charging up to three times the very best premiums available or declining HIV Positive people for Life Insurance entirely. We know that Banks and Life Insurers have been declining up to 56% of HIV Positive people in the last two years, without any reasonable explanations”.
Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have campaigned on behalf of the HIV Community for over two decades, firstly for the introduction of HIV Life Assurance, followed by the lengthening of policy terms and then most recently the reduction of monthly premiums. They are still currently able to arrange Life Insurance for people living with HIV at competitive premiums.
Unusual Risks are very proud to have played the lead role in improving the accessibility of financial products for people with HIV over the last decade and will continue to work on behalf of the community to secure better products. They are now able to guarantee all people living with HIV between the ages of 18 and 64, access to some form of Life Insurance.

Over the last 10 weeks it has become apparent that many Life Insurance Companies are restricting the availability of Life Insurance to people living with HIV. This means that many people are being declined for insurance cover through “Mainstream” brokers, life insurers, banks and building societies, who are perfectly eligible for Life Insurance.
Key Statistics From Unusual Risks Research – June 2020
“Only 13% of High Street Life Insurers, Banks and Building Societies are currently offering Life Insurance or Life Assurance to People With HIV”.
“0% of High Street Banks and Building Societies are currently offering any Life Insurance to People with HIV. 18 of the 18 High Street Banks surveyed do not offer cover to people with HIV”
“0% of High Street Street Life Insurers, Banks and Building Societies currently offer Income Protection or Critical Illness Cover to people living with HIV”
Those living with HIV who are seeking Life Insurance are advised to seek specialist financial advice before committing to taking cover.
During the last ten weeks since commencement of Lockdown we
have proudly been able to assist many Key Workers, NHS Staff, Doctors and
Nurses to review their Protection arrangements. We have been working hard to
secure Life Insurance products for people living with HIV with both insurers
and re-insurers.
We intend to review the latest research statistics periodically and will keep everyone informed of any developments.
Full Press Release – June 2020
Unusual Risks, financial advisers to the HIV Community are today announcing the results of their HIV Life Insurance Survey. After contacting all major Life Assurance providers and Banks and Building Societies in the UK, they can now report a significant reduction in availability as only 13%* of financial institutions are currently offering some form of HIV Life Assurance.
This is a significant reduction from the 70%* recorded
in last year’s survey and 90%* that they noted earlier this year. This is the eleventh
year that Unusual Risks have surveyed the availability of HIV Life Assurance
products in the UK, with the first ever survey in 2009 indicating less than 50%*
of insurance providers were offering any form of HIV Life Assurance.
Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead
Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;
‘We recently surveyed the top twelve life assurance
groups and were disappointed to see that only 33%* of companies are now
offering some form of Life Assurance to HIV Positive people. This is certainly a
backward step that takes us back to the earliest days of the launch of HIV Life
Assurance products in 2009’.
Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have campaigned on
behalf of the HIV Community for the last two decades, firstly for the
introduction of HIV Life Assurance, followed by the lengthening of policy terms
and then most recently the reduction of monthly premiums. They are still currently able to place Life
Insurance for people living with HIV at competitive premiums.
Although Life Insurance has been available for over a
decade for People living with HIV, Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover
is still unavailable. Unusual Risks are very proud to have played the lead role
in improving the accessibility of financial products for people with HIV over
the last decade and will continue to work on behalf of the community to secure
better products.
Our Sponsors Unusual Risks are the UK’s leading financial advisers offering advice to clients living with HIV or Hepatitis on HIV Life Assurance, HIV Life Insurance, HIV Mortgages, Hepatitis C Life Assurance, Hepatitis C Life Insurance, Hepatitis C Mortgages.
They are also the UK’s leading experts at planning Life Assurance and Mortgages for HIV Positive Families and are able to assist HIV Positive people looking for advice on their Pensions and Investments.*Please note Income Protection and Critical Illness is not currently available to people living with HIV.
Our friends at Unusual Risks, Financial Advisers to the HIV Community have today published the results of their annual research into the Average Sum Assured of Life Assurance that HIV Positive men and women are insuring themselves for. Currently HIV Positive people who are taking out Life Assurance in the UK are insuring themselves for an average of £153,549.
This figure is an increase on the previous running amount of £140,516, but more significantly the most recent 12 months average sum assured is now £220,466. The reasons for the increase in the average amounts of cover is the improvement in products available. The monthly premiums are now the lowest ever available and length of policies the longest ever available.
Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks,
Mortgage & Insurance Services said;
‘The average sum assured has remained fairly stable
for HIV Life Assurance over the last decade. However, this has improved
significantly in the last two years, due to more competitive premiums and
better terms being made available to consumers. It is vitality important that
consumers are aware that they can now cover themselves for larger sums at low
premium rates’.
‘We
are noticing significant improvements in both the monthly premiums available to
consumers and the length of the policies being made available. So, for example,
the maximum term now being offered is more likely to be between 20 and 25 years
instead of between 10 and 15 that may have been previously offered by insurance
companies. This is a very useful improvement as it is more in line with the
length of a standard mortgage’.
Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have campaigned on behalf of the HIV
Community for the last two decades, firstly for the introduction of HIV Life
Assurance, followed by the lengthening of policy terms and then most recently
the reduction of monthly premiums. HIV Life Assurance now has the lowest
premiums and longest terms ever offered to consumers.
Although Life Insurance has been available for over a decade for People living with HIV, Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover is still unavailable. Unusual Risks are very proud to have played the lead role in improving the accessibility of financial products for people with HIV over the last decade. They have recently relaunched their IPP & CIC campaign and have re-entered discussions with leading industry figures over this issue.

Ever since I became an Independent Financial Adviser in 1999, I’ve tried to use my specialist knowledge of the LGBT and HIV Communities to benefit those that may feel excluded by the Insurance Industry from protecting their basic financial needs.
My first campaign was related to the treatment of gay men by the Life Insurance companies (mainly due to HIV risk), which was resolved in 2005, with the removal of discriminatory questions on Life Insurance applications. (The Gay Question).
Immediately following this then came my campaign to secure Life Insurance for people living with HIV, which then resulted in the introduction of products in 2009. Ten years on from this people with HIV are still excluded from Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover …
Life Insurance & Life Assurance case Example, Adanna, Aged 35, Community Support Worker …
Recently I met an existing client that wanted to renew their Life Insurance policy that they started with my advice eight years ago. During the meeting they also asked me if I was now able to arrange some Income Protection in case they were sick from work?
Adanna asked …
“Since my diagnosis I’ve often wondered what would happen if I was unable to work due sickness or an accident? I have my mortgage covered for Life Insurance, but have since not been able to take any cover for my income in case of sickness or accident.”
It is true that we are unable to provide Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover for Adanna at this moment because there is not any suitable products currently available for people living with HIV. However, we were able to renew her Life Insurance policy for a longer term and an increased the level of cover for the full amount of her mortgage.
Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover Campaign – (“A Decade Is Long Enough”!)
We are talking to various product providers and leading industry figures on this issue and will keep you informed of developments through my Positive Finance column. I’m fully aware that it took over a decade to encourage Insurers to introduce HIV Life Insurance and HIV Life Assurance, so “IPP & CIC” is not going to be an easy task.
Over the coming weeks, I will be re-visiting our past research in this area and invite you all to participate in the campaign to secure Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover for people living with HIV. We are determined that these products should be fully inclusive products, without exclusions within their terms and conditions. (“A decade is long enough”!)
Other Medical Conditions
Throughout my career I’ve assisted many other people with medical conditions that are not directly HIV related, many of these Health Conditions I would consider to be “Private Medical” conditions. You will find a list of medical conditions that we can advise here http://unusual-risks.co.uk/?page_id=996
Chris Morgan was a consultant to the Association of British Insurers medical underwriting committee for over 15 years in relation to HIV and other private medical conditions. He has been advising clients in regards to their protection needs for over 30 years and is the UK’s Leading “HIV and Medical” financial adviser.

Unusual Risks our sponsors are specialists at finding inclusive Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection for people with complex medical situations. As the UK’s Leading Specialist “HIV and Medical” Financial Advisers, we understand the importance of Confidentiality, Discretion and Privacy in regards to medical information.
One of the biggest concerns that I hear time and time again from consumers looking for HIV Life Assurance and HIV Life Insurance, is about the handling of their medical information. We meet many people who prefer to speak with just one insurance broker instead of twenty Life Insurance companies.
According to our recent research there is only a 1 in 20 chance of finding the best premium and product for HIV Life Insurance. This includes online supermarkets and high street banks. The reason for this is that HIV Life Assurance is still very complicated to underwrite and some products providers charge up to 371% more than others for the product.
The answer is to approach a specialist financial adviser like our friends at Unusual Risks who can do all of the research for you. This would mean only disclosing once to an expert financial adviser, instead of multiple disclosures to Life Insurance Companies. We are specialists at finding the best financial products for people living with HIV.
Life Insurance & Life Assurance Case Example, Enid, Aged 48, Mental Health Nurse …
Enid approached me because she had been looking for HIV life Insurance and HIV Life Assurance, without a great deal of success. After approaching several companies, she was concerned about having to disclose her medical and personal information many times.
“Every time I speak with a new Life Insurance company, I have to disclose all my medical details over again. It is very frustrating and it is causing me stress and concern. I have had so many negative experiences, I’m not certain I’m even eligible for Life Insurance”.
Firstly I was able to confirm with Enid within a few minutes that she was indeed insurable and she was in fact approaching companies that still did not offer Life Insurance to people with HIV. We were then able to find her a suitable product at the lowest possible premium in the market.

Life Insurance was introduced for people living with HIV over a decade ago and as mentioned in my previous column, the Insurance Industry is still yet to offer Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover. Our friends at Unusual Risks are at the forefront of campaigning for change in this complicated area.
Within their role covering people for Life Insurance and Life Assurance they believe we also have a responsibility to represent the HIV Community by raising this outstanding issue within the Insurance Industry. They currently are in discussions with several leading industry figures over these matters.
Every week people contact my office for HIV Life Insurance and HIV Life Assurance and they also ask for Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover. Life Insurance products are HIV inclusive and currently “IPP & CIC” are exclude HIV, which they are working towards changing.
Life Insurance & Life Assurance Case Example, Lencho, Aged 47, School Teacher …
Lencho approached me for Life Insurance or Life Assurance, to protect his family. He had already spoken to another financial adviser and had been turned down for cover elsewhere. Ironically the Insurance Company he had been introduced to did not even offer cover to people with HIV. He was concerned about his privacy and the disclosures he had made.
Lencho Explained ..
“The financial adviser that
arranged my mortgage was insistent we also needed Life Insurance and it could
be arranged very easily. I was very concerned when he asked me questions about
HIV. He took me by surprise and I regret disclosing my HIV status to him”.
Our friends at Unusual Risks will only submit a formal application to a Life Insurance Company once they have a clear indication that they will offer terms. We take our clients disclosures and privacy very seriously and avoid any predictable adverse situations like the one encountered by Lencho.

I still get many comments about how my regular weekly and monthly resident columns are missed from Pink Paper, Positive Finance and Baseline Magazines. I’ve been writing for national press and media regarding LGBT and HIV financial issues for 20 years, which is of course as long as my financial practices have been serving their respective communities.
What makes those reactions so special for me is where they all share with me how they have benefitted from my advice and have been empowered to look after their financial future, whether buying homes or protecting their families. My work since 2009 has been focused on assisting people living with HIV and ending discrimination towards HIV Positive people within the insurance industry.
The repression of HIV people was so bad that I realised those issues needed my full attention. Over the last decade, I have co-written the industry best practice, written the consumer guide and represented the HIV Community in the working group that created HIV Life Insurance and HIV Life Assurance and watched over the development of products.
Life Insurance & Life Assurance Case Example, Alfonso, Aged 45, NHS Support Worker …
Alfonso approached me looking for advice around Life Insurance and Life Assurance, because he was taking a mortgage through his bank. The mortgage lender had given him the impression that Insurance was a condition of the mortgage borrowing, which concerned him because of his HIV Status. He preferred not to answer questions about this at his local branch.
Alfonso explained …
“I really did not wish to share my HIV Status with the bank and would prefer to keep any Life Insurance policy separate to the mortgage. They also were very keen to offer me Income Protection and Critical Illness, but they were unaware of my HIV Status, I just did not feel comfortable answering their questions on their application”.
We were able to confirm to Alfonso that Life Insurance and Life Assurance was not a condition of lending, but due to Alfonso’s circumstances with his family, it was probably a good idea to have some Life Insurance in place. We were also able to confirm that even though Life Insurance has been available to people living with HIV for a decade, Income Protection and Critical Illness is still unavailable.

Better Than Best Advice
“Better than best advice” is where there is a financial services product available to a client, but just because it is available, it does not mean it should be offered – especially if the terms and conditions are not favorable to the applicant and the only reason for the recommendation is financial gain by the financial adviser.
It has come to their attention that a certain mainstream financial adviser is advertising and offering Income Protection to people living with HIV, even though the product offered has specific exclusions for chronic medical conditions with symptoms during the last 12 months. (HIV is specifically excluded for payment of benefits within the policy).
Beware of Unsuitable Products
They are absolutely shocked that this adviser is offering a product that is completely unsuitable for people living with HIV, as it automatically excludes people living with HIV. They are also disgusted that they make reference to HIV Positive people as “Sufferers” on their website and have little experience of advising people living with HIV.
Unusual Risks continue to offer “Inclusive” Life Insurance to the HIV Community and are also continuing to campaign for the introduction of Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover. They are about to enter discussions once again with leading Insurance Industry figures over these issues and will continue to post updates throughout 2020.

Best PremiumComparison
Over the last decade there have been several “generations” of HIV Life Insurance products, with the latest being the fairest and best premiums ever available to the consumer. The 10th Anniversary of HIV life Insurance has seen the introduction of many new products and providers.
These changes have been wonderful for the HIV community in general, however it has become apparent that many people are still simply buying the wrong product or being recommended the wrong product by mainstreams brokers, who do not know about this complicated subject.
The Cost ofGetting the Wrong Product
They have met scores of clients recently who have been offered either the wrong product by their financial adviser, or have approached the wrong company themselves for Insurance. You have a 1 in 20 chance of finding the best product, so why on earth would you not take advice from the HIV Communities leading specialist financial adviser?
Their latest “Premium Comparison” survey takes into account all Insurance Comparison websites, Banks Building Societies and Insurance Companies. With one recent client case the difference between the cheapest and most expensive premiums equated to a huge 371% difference for a client applying for £230,000 of cover, was quoted at being between £33 and £123 per month.
Unsuitable Providers & Products
They have also seen a trend of clients who have tried to apply to companies directly, who do not even offer Life Insurance, Income Protection* or Critical Illness Cover* for people living with HIV – which is a huge waste of time for all parties involved.
It simply does not make sense trying to find Life Insurance Cover yourself, when you can secure the lowest Life Insurance premiums through a specialist HIV Insurance Broker with over 20 years experience in looking after people living with HIV.
