HIV and Insurance – Awareness

Our friends at Unusual Risks, the medical financial advisers are today announcing the first part of the results of their latest HIV and Insurance Survey. The survey has looked closely at issues, such as awareness of Insurance products and the cancellation of Insurance products by HIV Positive people.

Unusual Risks discovered that 33% of respondents still believed that Life Insurance was unavailable to HIV Positive people, even though products have been available since 2009. 67% of respondents correctly believed that Life Insurance was available to people with HIV.

42% of respondents believed that Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover were available to HIV Positive people, even though these products are yet to be offered by Insurance Companies. 58% of respondents correctly believed that IPP and CIC products were not available.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘The results of our latest survey show that there is still a great deal of work to do to promote awareness of HIV and Insurance products within the HIV Community. There still seems to be a great deal of confusion around the subject of Insurance for HIV Positive people’.

‘A third of respondents still believe that Life Insurance is unavailable to them, when in fact these products are available and  half of respondents believe that Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover is available, when in fact they are still unavailable.’

‘This survey was conducted amongst the widest group of HIV Positive people we have ever managed to reach. We would like to thank our friends at Baseline Magazine, NAM Aidsmap, The National Aids Trust and The Terence Higgins Trust for helping to promote this latest HIV and Insurance Survey’.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have recently been working with the Association of British Insurers, during the drafting of their latest HIV and Insurance Guiding Principles. The ABI are now calling for stakeholders from within the HIV Community to consult on the new proposed guidance for Insurers.

The ABI’s new guidance includes principles on underwriting approach, collection of information, use of information, company policy, and HIV Testing. There is also a new HIV and Life Insurance Consumer Guide expected in the near future that Chris Morgan has assisted the ABI in writing.

The aim of the consumer guide is to improve awareness of HIV and Insurance within the community and to deliver clear and accurate information about the availability of Insurance. Unusual Risks hope this will encourage HIV positive people to protect their families and their financial future.
