HIV Insurance Survey 2016 …

Our friends at Unusual Risks, the medical financial advisers are today announcing the results of their latest HIV Insurance Survey. After contacting all of the major Life Assurance providers in the UK, they can report that 75% of insurers are now offering some form of HIV Life Assurance.

This is the sixth year that Unusual Risks have surveyed the availability of HIV Life Assurance in the UK, with the earliest survey result in 2011 indicating only 50% of insurance providers were offering any form of HIV Life Assurance.

This year, Unusual Risks are pleased to report an increase in the number of Life Assurance Companies offering Life Insurance for HIV Positive people. Gradually over the last seven years more insurers have elected to offer HIV Life Assurance, which means more choice for HIV Positive consumers.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;

‘We recently surveyed the top twelve life assurance groups, who service brokers and were delighted to see that 75% of companies are now offering some form of Life Assurance to HIV Positive people. We are greatly encouraged that this figure continues to improve each year.

‘Having more Life Insurance products available to HIV Positive people is obviously a good thing, because this will lead to improved terms and premiums in the future. Unusual Risks are constantly liaising with product providers to improve the availability and standards of HIV Life Insurance.

‘I have recently been working with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to raise awareness of HIV Life Insurance and have co-written their new HIV and Life Insurance Consumer Guide that is now widely available’.

The focus of the new HIV and Life Insurance Consumer Guide is to help break the stigma associated with HIV Positive people accessing financial products and to raise awareness that Life Assurance for HIV Positive people now exists. (Email enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk to obtain a copy).

In another recent survey Unusual Risks established that 33% of HIV Positive people were unaware that Life Assurance was available to them, even though it has been for seven years and 22% of HIV positive people had cancelled an Insurance policy due to their HIV Diagnosis.

An astonishing 40% of those cancelling would in fact have been covered by their policy, which is a clear  indication that more needs to be done to help HIV Positive consumers make informed decisions about their financial future.

Average HIV Life Assurance …

Our friends at Unusual Risks, the medical financial advisers have today published the results of their annual research into the average amounts of Life Assurance that HIV Positive men and women are insuring themselves for. Currently HIV Positive people who are taking out Life Assurance in the UK are insuring themselves for an average of £134,733.

This latest survey was conducted as a follow up to a similar survey that was released last year where the average figure was £137,192. It appears that the average figure for HIV Life Assurance has now finally stabilised following the introduction of higher policy underwriting limits by Insurance Companies over the last few years.

Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks, Mortgage & Insurance Services said,

‘Last year there was a sharp increase in the sum assured of the average HIV Life Assurance in the UK, because a number of insurance companies removed their £250,000 maximum cover limit for applicants. This year’s figure shows that the market has now stabilised following these changes by the major insurers.

‘There are now many more opportunities for HIV positive people to obtain Life Insurance, with companies now offering significantly higher amounts of Insurance. Life Insurance has been available to HIV positive people since 2009, however in our recent survey 33% of Positive people were still unaware that cover was even available to them.’

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have recently been working with the Association of British Insurers and have helped them to produce a new HIV and Life Insurance Consumer Guide. Copies of the new Consumer Guide are now available by contacting them at enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk

The guide includes information about Sexual Orientation and Insurance, Key Principles of HIV and Insurance, HIV Testing, Availability of Insurance products, Cancellation of Life Insurance following diagnosis and disclosure of HIV status on Life Insurance applications.

The aim of the guide is to improve awareness of HIV and Insurance within the community and to deliver clear and accurate information about the availability of Insurance. Unusual Risks hope this will encourage HIV positive people to protect their families and look after their financial future.

HIV and Life Insurance – Cancellation Of Policies On Diagnosis

Our friends at Unusual Risks, the medical financial advisers are today announcing part two of the results from their latest HIV and Insurance Survey. The survey has looked closely at issues, such as awareness of Insurance products and the cancellation of Insurance products by HIV Positive people.

Unusual Risks discovered that 22% of respondents have cancelled an Insurance policy following their diagnosis with HIV. The respondents were asked to confirm if they had cancelled any Insurance’s including Life Insurance, Endowments, Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover.

The survey also established that 40% of the respondents who indicated they had cancelled their Insurance, would of in fact been covered by their policy for HIV. It is not uncommon for Life Insurance policies to continue offering Life Insurance to people who have been diagnosed with HIV.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;

‘The results of the survey indicate there is still a great deal of work to do to raise awareness around cancellation of policies for people living with HIV. HIV Positive people are still cancelling and surrendering Life Insurance policies that could continue to provide valuable benefits to them”.

‘I meet people every week who are thinking about cancelling their insurance, who have recently been diagnosed with HIV. There is still a great misconception that Life Insurance does not cover people living with HIV, when in fact in most cases these days it does’.

Life Insurance Advice For HIV Positive People … Cancellations and Disclosures

Our friends at Unusual Risks and their lead financial adviser Chris Morgan have been working with the Association of British Insurers over the the past year, to produce new guiding principles for insurers and also a new Life Insurance consumer guide for HIV Positive people. Both are due to be published very soon and they would like to talk about some of the main issues that they have asked to be included in the new consumer guide …

Cancellations and Disclosures!

Every week they are approached by HIV Positive people with existing Life Insurance, who are unsure if their policies still cover them? Some of these people have paid premiums for literally years, without even knowing if their policy is valid. Many of these people found themselves in difficult circumstances at outset, that meant they decided not to disclose their personal information.

During the consultation process with the Association of British Insurers, they sited very strongly the need for Insurance Companies to do more to help HIV Positive people make informed decisions. Chris Morgan their Lead Financial Adviser has co-written the new Consumers Guide which aim to give clear and accurate information on these issues.

Ahead of the publication launch here’s some key issues for you to consider …

If you were HIV Negative at the outset of your Life Insurance and then subsequently became HIV Positive, then it is highly likely that you’re Life Insurance will continue to cover you. In Unusual Risk’s recent survey they discovered that 22% of HIV Positive people have cancelled an existing Insurance as a result of their diagnosis and that 40% of these people would in fact still have been covered by their insurance company.

If you were HIV Positive at the outset of your policy and failed to disclose this on the application form, then is it highly likely that your Life Insurance will be invalid and will not cover you. They understand that people do this for many different reasons and in fact sometimes applicants feel the need to make a false declaration to protect their confidentiality and private health information.

HIV positive people who have taken out Life Insurance without making the necessary disclosures may find themselves paying monthly premiums to an insurance company, without knowing if the their policy is valid. Unusual Risks are always happy to assist people in this situation and offer advice on the best way to handle sensitively any “Non Disclosure” situations you may have with an existing insurance company.

Many Life Insurance companies now offer Life Insurance to HIV Positive applicants, so it is no longer necessary to “Non Disclose” on application forms. Premiums and terms vary between the different companies, so be sure to approach an Independent Insurance Adviser like Unusual Risks for advice. Chris Morgan led a ten year campaign (1999-2009) to secure Life Insurance for HIV Positive people in the United Kingdom.

HIV Positive people who have existing Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection polices, should most definitely seek specialist financial advice before making decisions with their policies. There are so many variations of these types of policies that it’s advisable to consult a financial adviser before making any decisions. Unusual Risks are always happy to take a look at your existing policies if you feel unsure if they are still valid?

Watch this space for news of the new ABI Guiding principles for Insurance Companies and their new Consumer Guide, as both are expected to be published very soon. You can register your interest in receiving the new consumer guide by emailing your details to Unusual Risks at Enquiries@unusualrisks.co.uk When published the new guide will be available from us free of charge either by post or by email!

HIV Life Assurance & HIV Life Insurance – Latest News

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have recently been consulting with stakeholders from within the HIV Community about their new “Guiding Principles” for insurance companies around HIV and Insurance.

Some of the community stakeholders that have recently been consulted include National Aids Trust, Terence Higgins Trust, Nam Aidsmap, HIV Scotland, George House Trust and Waverley Care.

Chris Morgan the lead financial adviser at Unusual Risks, is part of the working group that created the new principles and following the consultation we are expecting them to be completed and published very soon.

Also, the new ABI consumer guide about HIV and Life Insurance, that fits alongside the new best practice, will be published soon and we will keep you informed of developments as they happen.

The new guide will be used to raise awareness of the availability of Life Insurance for HIV positive people. 33% of HIV Positive people in the UK still believe they cannot obtain Life Insurance when it is in fact available?

Case Example: Loretta is Aged 48 and works as a nurse …

Loretta Said …

“I currently have a mortgage in place for £210,000 and would like to protect both myself and my family against potential problems in the future. I have one daughter aged 18 and I would like the security of knowing that she is looked after should anything happen to me”.

Loretta Continued …

“I would like to know more about Life Assurance and protecting my mortgage payments against the effects of taking off work due to illness. I’m currently taking medication, my CD4 count is strong and my viral load has been undetectable for the last two years”.

Here’s the latest news with regards to Insurance products for HIV Positive people …

Every week people still contact Unusual Risks not realising that they can now apply for Life Assurance to protect their Mortgages, Families, Children and Businesses. The Life Assurance industry repeatedly told the HIV Community that we were uninsurable for over two decades, so this is not surprising.

However, due to the HIV and Insurance campaign that their lead financial adviser Chris Morgan led for over a decade the insurance industry decided to offer Life Assurance to HIV Positive people in 2009. Life Insurance products are now available at both realistic and accessible premiums.

And Loretta?

Unusual Risks arranged HIV Life Assurance for Loretta on her new mortgage for £210,000 after showing her a number of options from £190,000 to £250,000. They always tailor any Life Insurance policy to their client’s individual needs and affordability, so contact us of a quotation.

HIV and Insurance – Awareness

Our friends at Unusual Risks, the medical financial advisers are today announcing the first part of the results of their latest HIV and Insurance Survey. The survey has looked closely at issues, such as awareness of Insurance products and the cancellation of Insurance products by HIV Positive people.

Unusual Risks discovered that 33% of respondents still believed that Life Insurance was unavailable to HIV Positive people, even though products have been available since 2009. 67% of respondents correctly believed that Life Insurance was available to people with HIV.

42% of respondents believed that Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover were available to HIV Positive people, even though these products are yet to be offered by Insurance Companies. 58% of respondents correctly believed that IPP and CIC products were not available.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks Said;

‘The results of our latest survey show that there is still a great deal of work to do to promote awareness of HIV and Insurance products within the HIV Community. There still seems to be a great deal of confusion around the subject of Insurance for HIV Positive people’.

‘A third of respondents still believe that Life Insurance is unavailable to them, when in fact these products are available and  half of respondents believe that Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover is available, when in fact they are still unavailable.’

‘This survey was conducted amongst the widest group of HIV Positive people we have ever managed to reach. We would like to thank our friends at Baseline Magazine, NAM Aidsmap, The National Aids Trust and The Terence Higgins Trust for helping to promote this latest HIV and Insurance Survey’.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have recently been working with the Association of British Insurers, during the drafting of their latest HIV and Insurance Guiding Principles. The ABI are now calling for stakeholders from within the HIV Community to consult on the new proposed guidance for Insurers.

The ABI’s new guidance includes principles on underwriting approach, collection of information, use of information, company policy, and HIV Testing. There is also a new HIV and Life Insurance Consumer Guide expected in the near future that Chris Morgan has assisted the ABI in writing.

The aim of the consumer guide is to improve awareness of HIV and Insurance within the community and to deliver clear and accurate information about the availability of Insurance. Unusual Risks hope this will encourage HIV positive people to protect their families and their financial future.
